Trump spars with press over veterans money

In a news conference where he laid out details of how he handed out almost $6 million in money to veterans groups around the nation, Donald Trump sparred repeatedly with reporters on Tuesday, denouncing one from ABC as “sleazy,” as he gave the news media the verbal back of the hand while being broadcast live on various cable news networks.

“I think the political press is among the most dishonest people I have ever met,” Trump said, responding to a question from Carl Cameron of Fox News.

Trump’s biggest zinger was to an ABC reporter at the news conference, when Tom Llamas asked Trump about his fundraising for veterans groups.

“This sleazy guy from ABC, right over here – he’s a sleaze in my book,” Trump said, as Llamas demanded to know what qualified him as sleazy.

“You’re a sleaze, because you know the facts and you know the facts well,” as Trump added to his put down, swiftly moving on to another question and another reporter.

Trump also mocked reporter Jim Acosta of CNN, interrupting his line of questions to say derisively, “I’ve watched you on television – you’re a real beauty.”

Trump’s face off with the news media seems unlikely to hurt him, as that type of in-your-face-bravado is red meat to many in the Republican Party who believe the news media is out to get Trump, and in the back pocket of Hillary Clinton.

Jabs at the news media are a regular part of the Trump stump speech – and one should certainly expect to hear more of it as Trump campaigns in California this week.
